Jasper County, Texas, and its residents deserve a vibrant, trustworthy community newspaper. That belief is at the heart of why we’re launching the Jasper County News.
I began my career in community journalism in 1998, and I remember when the Jasper Newsboy was one of the most respected papers in Texas. It was even the fourth-oldest newspaper in the state.
Unfortunately, the Newsboy’s legacy has dwindled since being acquired by Hearst Media. It now functions mostly as a regional print edition with little local identity. We wanted to change that and bring a truly local voice back to Jasper.
It’s our honor to do this, but it also fits our company’s vision. We own a press plant in Center, Texas, and if you travel up U.S. 96, it’s a near straight line connecting three Phillips Publishing locations. That makes serving Jasper strategically advantageous.
This means we can ensure quality while being truly local. Right now, we’re hiring. We need an advertising sales rep—a challenging but exciting role since this paper is brand new—and we’re also seeking writers, part-time or stringers.
If you want to be part of this, reach out to dylan@silsbee-bee.com. We’re building this for Jasper, and we’re ready to bring a true community voice back home.
